Journey through the desert...

بسم الله الرحمن الرحيم

Photos from our recent road trip from Al-Khobar (east coast of KSA) back to Riyadh. Notice the pale coloured sand near to Al-Khobar which gradually changes until the sand around the Riyadh area is the vivid orange variety. A journey from the the east to the west of Saudi Arabia will show you so many variations on the one thing: desert. Pale sand in the east, orange sand in Najd (Riyadh), black volcanic soil around Madinah.

In this first photo you can just about see some Bedouin tents:

The long road through the desert taking you to the east coast (Al-Khobar, Dammam, Jubail):

Camels eating the scant vegetation that can be found:

A couple of sand dune pics:

Not sure what this is just outside of Riyadh but it looks very much like some kind of camel market... Lots of small enclosures of camels and trucks:

Assalaamu Alaykum,

Subhan Allah, isn't it amazing! Nice pics. I really want to go for a desert trip with the kids. Too hot now though! How was Khobar?

Assalaamu alalikum.
How did you like Al-Khobar? How does it compare to Riyadh?

Assalaamu Alaykum,
Slightly off topic sorry, but I'd like your opinion on something please. If I were fully covered - albeit not in an abaya, but jeans/long sleeved shirt, gloves etc - and travelling with my husband as pillion rider on a motorbike, would I be hassled by the police? Would it be deemed as haram to travel in such a way? We'd really love to do a tour of KSA, but not at the risk of being punished. Your opinion would be appreciated, shukran :-)

Assalaamu alaikum,

Khobar was nice... to windy to go to the beach sadly but we got along to the corniche which is nice, probably similar to Jeddah Umm Hibaat. Khobar is more relaxed than Riyadh and is not such a huge place. I lived in small towns or villages all my life and then I came to Riyadh - crazy or what?!

Sadly myself and the kids don't have an exit-reentry visa so we couldn't pop over the bridge to see what Bahrain is like or drive that bit further to Qatar. Those visas are so frustrating!

Jayne... I really have no idea to be honest! Um... will see if there is anyone I can ask or anyone hubby can ask. :)

hmm, did you get bored? your quote of the only thing that changes is the desert lol :P missed you :D

Maybe the Sahara some day eh Ines? ;) I keep telling hubby it would be nice to go to the Sahara sometime...

Ammena - I have this strange fixation with the desert so I couldn't get bored! The scenery of the desert keeps changing - flat for a while, then huge dunes and strange plateaus, then you'll find an area dotted with vegetation, you can keep camel watching. It's lovely!

Salaams...It's amazing how one terrain can have so much variety. Alhamdulillah. Shukran for sharing those pictures, they are beautifully inspiring in a way that I can't describe. The bedouin tents in the distance...nice to know they are still around. And your sand dune picture is so professional, sis. Should be on a postcard!

Lovely!

As much as I get stir-crazy over here, I have to say I have a deep love for the Middle-East.

Assalaamu alaikum,

Digital niqabi That sand dune pic does look good huh?! I did have to crop though to get rid of some of the mess. Not bad for a pic take on a cellphone camera from the window of a moving car! LOL

l_oman Drives me stir crazy too (having a crazy day today actually) but I also love the Middle East. Do you have blog to share?? I would love for us to be able to visit Oman insha'Allah. :)

Assalaamu alaikum,

Hi Maryam, didn't see your comment there babe! xxx

Nabbu: Just make lots of dua then. ;) I wonder if Dammam changed much in the 3 or 4 years you've been away...
